Petrified Forest, AZ—March is Arizona Archeology and Heritage Awareness Month. Events throughout Arizona celebrate the state's cultural history with special presentations. This year's theme is From Desert to Mountain: Valuing Our Heritage.

With over 13,000 years of human history recorded at Petrified Forest National Park, we invite you to help us celebrate! Events in the park include:

Saturdays in March (March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29)
Sandbox Archeology Painted Desert Visitor Center 10am-12pm
Led by a park ranger, children can excavate artifacts reflecting the park's rich human history.

Cultural Demonstrations Painted Desert Inn 10am-4pm
Cultural demonstrators with ancestral ties to the area will share engaging skills and traditions.

Puerco Pueblo Walk meet at Puerco Pueblo 2pm
Join a ranger on an easy walk to explore remnants of an ancestral Puebloan village. Allow about 45 minutes to enjoy this 0.3 mile (0.5 km) walk on a paved trail.

Wednesday March 5 and Wednesday March 19
Lacey Point Hike meet at Lacey Point 10am
Hike off-trail into the Painted Desert to discover some of the best petroglyphs in the park! This moderately difficult walk is about two miles round trip and takes about two hours. Lacey Point is approximately five miles from the north entrance of the park. Be prepared with appropriate footwear, water, a hat, and sunscreen.

Wednesday March 12 and Wednesday March 26
Historic Route 66 Hike meet at Painted Desert Visitor Center 10am
Petrified Forest is the only National Park with a portion of Historic Route 66 inside its boundaries! Enjoy a moderate, two-mile round trip hike along a portion of the Mother Road which should take about two hours. Meet at the Painted Desert Visitor Center, then caravan approximately six miles to where the hike begins. Be prepared with appropriate footwear, water, a hat, and sunscreen.

Every day in March
Archeology Exhibit Painted Desert Inn 10am-4pm
Enjoy an exhibit that showcases this park's 13,000+ year human history.
