Ken Olson's Lessons Learned as a Friends CEO (cont)
Manage External Relations

  • Accomplish actual work and then create a public perception of the accomplishment. Don't expect anyone else to initiate your news or to characterize your work better than you. Consistently get your organization in the press, develop and build its brand recognition.
  • Regularly collect your clippings, send them to donors and publish them in your newsletter. A good news article, editorial or news photo about your organization's is third-party validation of what you are accomplishing with other people's money.
  • Engage supportive members of your congressional delegation. Always cast supportive legislators as "pro-park" and the like. Thank them, preferably publicly, for any help they give to the park or your organization. Keep them informed of project progress. Make friends with as many as you can and get to know their staffs. Visit your Reps in Washington and make sure they are on the invitation list for special events.
