Educational CD ROM

Description: An educational CD ROM based on the Homestead National Monument of America's curriculum-based activity guide, was created. The CD ROM is another resource for teachers to use to teach the Homestead Act of 1862 and the legacy of the homesteading movement. It is appropriate for grades K-12.

Geographic area covered: School districts throughout Nebraska

List of Partners and Relationships: Nebraska Education Task Force (NETF) a catalyst group dedicated to excellence in education for underserved rural areas in Nebraska; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska; and the Friends of Homestead.

Accomplishments to date: The CD ROM was contracted with Unparallel Productions by NETF. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska provided funding for the project, and the Friends of Homestead maintain the copyright to the product. All content was reviewed, edited and approved by appropriate staff of Homestead National Monument of America. Complimentary copies of the CD ROM were sent to all school districts throughout Nebraska. It is also available for sale through the monument's cooperating association bookstore.

Key success factors: Strong support from partners with educational interests and funding.

Frustrations:

Most important lessons learned to date: Work with an experienced computer software developer.

What would you do differently next time:Communicate constantly with the contractor. Seek advice from outside talent. The state public television station, it was discovered later, would have been advantageous and beneficial to the project.
