Recognition Forms Not Appropriate in Parks

Certain forms of recognition are not considered appropriate in parks. Advertising and marketing slogans and taglines are not allowed in order to maintain NPS policy that parks remain free from commercialism according to Directors Order #21. No donor recognition is allowed on donated vehicles.

Donor recognition is also not allowed on bricks, benches or other park furnishings.

In-park recognition should not be proposed in areas that compete for attention with, or attract attention away from, the purpose for which the park was created. Plaques are not to be affixed to the "historic fabric" of structures nor should they, or any other donor recognition treatment, be placed in natural zones or cultural zones where they would intrude on the character of the area.

The naming of rooms, features or park facilities to recognize monetary or in-kind donations to a park or NPS is also not acceptable unless this higher level of recognition is approved, which may be granted on an exemption basis. Recognition generally may not be included on park regulatory or safety signs.

If you have questions regarding appropriate or inappropriate donor recognition or wish to explore an exemption, contact your regional partnership coordinator or the Washington Partnership Office
