BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT

Frijoles Canyon Cliffdwelling

The canyon walls are tuff, volcanic ash which is soft and crumbly. The Ancestral Pueblo people often carved small caves, called cavates, into the tuff. Later, they built masonry homes along the cliffs, using the cavates as back rooms. Today ladders lead visitors into several of these cavates.
