MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK

Because Mammoth is such a dry cave, it contains very few flowstone formations. One of the largest concentrations of stalactites is found in the Drapery Room, located under the Frozen Niagara formation. Stalactites and stalagmites are formed as calcium carbonate crystallizes out of evaporating water droplets hanging from the cave walls or dripping to the floor. Image courtesy of Gary Berdeaux.
