ANTIETAM NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD

Rows of luminaries glowing in the darkness on the battlefield.

The Memorial Illumination is held on the first Saturday in December. 1,000 volunteers place and light 23,000 candles in paper bags across the battlefield. Each candle represents a soldier that was killed or wounded during the battle. Visitors drive through an awesome reminder of the magnitude of loss at Antietam.
