These sunbathing horses can be seen on Shackleford Banks. Shackleford Banks is the southern most island of Cape Lookout National Seashore and is home to the wild Shackleford horses.
The Shackleford horses, like western mustangs, were reintroduced to North America by European explorers and settlers. Records show horses living on the Outer Banks for centuries. Genetic research shows evidence of Spanish ancestry in the Shackleford herd.
