Cape Lookout Light Station is found on South Core Banks. The Keeper's Quarters acts as a visitor information station during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Construction on this lighthouse began in 1857 and it became operational in 1859. The lighthouse we see today was the second Cape Lookout Lighthouse; this 163-foot-tall lighthouse was built to replace the original 107-foot lighthouse that had proven to be inadequate.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse's day mark (painted exterior) is unique. Referred to as diagonal checkerboard, the black and white checkers are laid out with the compass adding to its usefulness as a navigation tool.
