FLORISSANT FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

Mudflows from an ancient volcano buried a forest of redwood trees that once grew in the Florissant valley. Florissant’s largest and most conspicuous fossils are petrified stumps of these giant trees.
