Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Response
NPS Gulf of Mexico Sunrise
Park Status as of May 26, 2010: Padre Island National Seashore is located well over 500 miles from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Computer models are not currently forecasting large amounts of oil moving this far westward. Surface currents with visible oil contamination are easily monitored. However, due to the depth of this spill, it is difficult to gauge how the oil may be spreading deep in the water column and along the seafloor. If the volume of the spill increases significantly, currents and strong winds could potentially bring remnants of the spill to the Texas coast during the coming months. Those considering a visit to Padre Island National Seashore are advised to monitor the park’s website for the most up to date information on beach conditions. |
