Lodging and camping facilities

The park offers no lodging or camping facilities. The City of Brownsville offers a number of hotels and RV parks. Reservation information can be obtained from the Brownsville Convention and Visitor Bureau.

Nearby RV and primitive camping facilities can be found at Adolph Thomae, Jr. Park and Isla Blanca units of the Cameron County Park System. Camping opportunities can also be found at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, TX and at South Padre Island KOA.

Battle of Palo Alto

Like his rider, Zachary Taylor’s horse became a national hero. Praised for his bravery in battle, “Old Whitey” became the subject of portraits, poetry, and music. When Taylor became President in 1850, the horse was allowed to graze on the White House lawn.
