Bill Staines Concert
Folksinger Bill Staines will perform a free concert at Big Spring on June 14, 2011 at 7:30 pm. In honor of Flag Day he'll be singing his folk ballads about the people and places of America. Bill Staines has written songs for Peter, Paul and Mary, Nanci Griffith, Glen Yarborough and Jerry Jeff Walker, among others. Bill's music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon, the on-the-road truckers, or the everyday workers that make up this land. On stage, Staines is an intimate, compelling performer, out of the folk scene of the 60's, encouraging his audience to sing with him on his chorus songs. He will mix in traditional tunes with his own contemporary folk ballads. His humorous tales of life on the road and observations of everyday people provide an entertaining blend of story and song. "I have always wanted to bring something of value to people with my songs. I think that is important, to try to write beyond myself, to write to the great things that we all experience in our lives." For Bill, that is what folk music is all about--a music rich in the human experience and spirit. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as "a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now." Over the decades, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, HBO's award winning series Deadwood, and Public Radio's Mountain Stage. Additionally, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running, with Cyndi Lauper, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven, John Sayles' debut as a writer- director. Nanci Griffith once wrote, "Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody Guthrie left off- carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew." Come join Bill and your neighbors at the Big Spring Depression Farm, across the parking lot from the Spring itself. Bill will play on the steps of the cabin. Remember to bring a lawn chair or blanket! This concert is FREE. June 14, 2011 at 7:30 pm. See you there! |
