Van Buren MO – On August 27th, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act establishing Ozark National Scenic Riverways, as a unit of the National Park Service. Many FREE events and activities will be offered in recognition of the park's fifty anniversary. The events, dates, times and descriptions are as follows.

Junior Ranger Day Friday, May 9, 2014

Alley Spring, Eminence, MO

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., explore nature during Junior Ranger Day at Alley Spring. Using hands on activities, children ages 6 to 16 can discover Missouri's wonderful natural world and the Current and Jacks Fork Watersheds. Live animals will be available for viewing.

Join the Ozark Skies Astronomy Club at 9:00 p.m. to see stars and constellations up close and personal using high magnification telescopes.Explore the Ozark skies without the hindrance of urban lights. Visitors are welcome to bring their own telescopes or binoculars. Meet at the open grassy area near the group campground.

Ozark Heritage DaySaturday, June 28, 2014

Big Spring, Van Buren, MO

Join the Ozark Heritage Foundation and journey into the past to experience old time traditional skills and craft demonstrations.Activities begin at 10:00 a.m. near the Depression Era Cabin. Rug and rope making, woodworking, broom making, chair caning, pottery, gigging, and lye soap making are just some of the traditional Ozark lifeways demonstrated. Fish and Dutch Oven cooking contests will be offered.Quilters can participate in the quilt contest.There will be a pie supper and cake walk. Musical entertainment will be provided. Food and drink items will be available for purchase from local vendors.Please bring a blanket or lawn chair for the musical entertainment.

This event commemorates the traditional picnic celebrations that were held at Alley Spring around the turn of the twentieth century when this area was the social gathering place for local families.Children of all ages can enjoy old fashioned games and toys. Musical entertainment and dance demonstrations will be provided.Ice cream and food will be available for purchase from local vendors. Please bring a blanket or lawn chair for the musical and dancing entertainment beginning at 6:00 p.m. near Storey Creek School.

On August 27, 1964, the act creating Ozark National Scenic Riverways was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., guest speakers, Ranger staff, and invited dignities will be on hand to commemorate the event and discuss the grassroots efforts of the park's founding. A historic film will be shown that illustrates the Ozark region in the early 1960s prior to the park's establishment. Musical entertainment will be provided. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for all the festivities at the Depression Era Cabin.

The Ozark past comes to life with folkway demonstrations, reenactments, music, hands-on activities, food and an evening filled with memorable tales and legends. Events begin at 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and then 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Local skilled artisans demonstrate their special crafts. Experience pioneer skills and traditions such as basket weaving, spinning, wood carving, black and tinsmithing, chair canning and the making of household supplies such as soap, candles, rope, brooms and apple butter. Learn about the local Ozark history. Musical entertainment will be provided. Hands-on activities for young people will be offered. Food, beverages, and snacks will be available by vendors on the event grounds.

Old Fashioned Christmas and Open House Saturday, December 6, 2014

Alley Spring, Eminence, MO

Beginning at 10:00 am, the Alley Mill General Store is hosting an old fashioned Christmas celebration. Bring the whole family and your friends to view Alley Mill and the store all dressed up in holiday decorations. Feast on cookies, cider and hot chocolate. Try out your creativity by making old-time ornaments that you can take home and hang on your Christmas tree to enjoy. The old-time festivities end at 1:00 pm, so come early to allow plenty of time for cookie munching and ornament crafting.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves the free-flowing Current and Jacks Fork Rivers, the surrounding natural resources, and the unique cultural heritage of the Ozark people.
