Poetry Workshop and Reading conducted by Poet Michael Spring at the Chateau at the Oregon Caves

Superintendent Vicki Snitzler of the National Park Service at Oregon Caves National Monument is pleased to announce that Poet Michael Spring has joined the Monument's Artist in Residence Program.As part of the program, Mr. Spring will be hosting a public poetry writing workshop and reading at the Chateau at Oregon Caves on Saturday May 31st, 2014.We are very excited to offer these programs to our visitors.

Michael Spring, resident of the Illinois Valley, is the author of five chapbooks and three poetry collections. His first book blue crow (LitPot press, Inc., 2003) was translated into Portuguese by The University of the Azores, Portugal. A group of poems from his second book Mudsong (Pygmy Forest Press, 2005) won The 2004 Robert Graves Award. Mudsong was also included in a list of 150 outstanding poetry books in Oregon history, nominated by the public and announced in 2007 by Oregon State Library and Poetry Northwest. His third book Root of Lightning (Pygmy Forest Press, 2011), was awarded an honorable mention for the 2012 Eric Hoffer Book Award. Michael Spring's most recent chapbook blue wolf (Dancing Moon Press, 2013) won the 2013 Turtle Island Poetry Award.

Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate has stated "Michael Spring creates a lyric terrain in which the borders between interior and exterior worlds dissolve."

The poetry writing workshop is scheduled from 1:00-4:00p.m.Reservations for the workshop can be made by calling the Chateau at 541.592.3400.For workshop participants, there is an opportunity to take a cave tour as a group at 5:00p (8.50 per/person; maximum 15 people on the cave tour).Participants are encouraged to take advantage of the Chateau's Spring Special: book any room at the regular rate and stay a second night for a reduced rate of one-half off.Please make your reservation for the workshop, lodging and tour by May 29th 2014.

In the evening at 7:00p.m., Michael will be reading from his work in the Chateau Lobby.Michael's books will be available at both events.The workshop and reading are free.Donations by participants are requested.

These events will be a wonderful opportunity to see the Monument in a new and different way and to stretch your creative muscles.
