The staff of Olympic National Park mourns the death of longtime park maintenance employee Daniel R. Green, who died on Friday, October 13, as a result of severe head injuries suffered in an October 5 fall.

“Our hearts go out to Dan’s family and to his many close friends throughout the community,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Bill Laitner.  “Dan was a valued member of our park staff who was loved and admired by his coworkers.  He will be sorely missed.”

Dan was working in the Kalaloch area on October 5, when he fell from the park dump truck he had been operating.  Although no one witnessed his fall, other park employees were in the area and had seen and talked with Dan only minutes prior to finding him lying unconscious on the ground next to the truck’s cab.  First aid and emergency medical care were provided by park staff on the scene and Dan was airlifted to the regional trauma center in Seattle, where he remained until his death.

An engineering equipment operator, Dan was a 26-year employee of Olympic National Park.  He will be remembered for his big heart, his enthusiasm for life, his ready smile and his sense of humor.

An NPS accident investigation team will arrive in the park tomorrow to begin a formal investigation into what may have caused the accident and to learn what can be done to prevent future accidents of this nature.  “Doing everything we can to prevent another incident like this is one way we can honor Dan’s memory,” affirmed Laitner.

In honor of Dan Green, flags in all NPS areas throughout the six-state Pacific West Region will fly at half staff through sunset the day of interment.
