With autumn’s arrival this Friday and cool, wet weather throughout the Olympic Peninsula, Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest will jointly lift their summer restrictions on all open campfires, to take effect at 11:00 PM, Thursday, September 21, 2006. “Now that rain is falling and fire danger has dropped in the park and forest, we can return to our normal fire regulations,” said Bill Laitner, Olympic National Park Superintendent. Dale Hom, Olympic National Forest Supervisor added, “We continue to urge all forest and park visitors to use care and common sense if they decide to have a campfire.” In Olympic National Forest: Fires are allowed in the forest’s backcountry and wilderness below 3,500 feet only. Campfires are also allowed in dispersed campsites along forest roads, and in fireplaces at designated campgrounds and cabins. In Olympic National Park: Campfires are allowed in the park’s wilderness backcountry below 3,500 feet only. Campfires are not allowed on the park’s coast between the headland at Wedding Rocks and the headland north of Yellow Banks. Campfires are permitted in established fire grates at established front-country campgrounds. |
