Olympic Fisher Updates

A biologist uses an antenna to listen for radio signals from one of the fishers released in early 2008.

Learning from Fishers
Each released fisher is fitted with a tiny radio transmitter to allow scientists to track the fishers as they move through their new habitat, establish home ranges and reproduce. Already biologists have found that the fishers released in early 2008 have traveled widely throughout the park, seemingly undaunted by ridgelines and rivers.  One animal has covered as much as 11 miles in a single week!

Since most of the park and much of Olympic National Forest are inaccessible by road, much of the monitoring is done through aerial radiotelemetry, although ground tracking is used when possible.

Does this flower look familiar?  The bunchberry, a common groundcover of Olympic's lowland forest, is closely related to the dogwood trees found throughout North America.
