Make a Totem Pole
Native Americans carve totem poles to tell ancient family legends. Beaver, bear, eagle, raven, frog or wolf might be part of these stories carved in cedar. Each tribe has a distinct style of carving that reflects its culture. Visit the following links to learn more about the tradition of totem poles, then create your own totem pole that tells a special story and share it with your family or classmates. Teachers: Please visit the Lesson 3 Totem Poles in the Creative Response section of Olympic's Freeing the Elwha Curriculum, for a classroom-ready activity and rubric. Parents: Follow this link for a lesson plan and printable pages for a thunderbird, fish and frog. Color in the images, draw your own, or use construction paper to adorn your totem pole.
