The Ohio and Erie National Heritage Canalway
The Ohio and Erie Canalway in northeast Ohio was constructed to provide transportation between the Eastern seaboard and the Western frontier. It helped advance westward expansion and made Ohio a booming area. Today the Ohio and Erie National Heritage Canalway is a place to explore the past, present and future with scenic byways, canal towns, rivers and lakes, and industrial landscapes.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
70 miles of multi-use recreational trail are available to visitors along the Canalway. On the Towpath Trail, visitors love the escape from congested roads through scenic forests and along historic sites — all on a comfortable surface. Museums, visitor centers, historic sites and parks serve as welcoming stops along the trail. Events are scheduled along the Towpath Trail throughout the year, including marathon runs, history hikes, bicycle excursions and more.

Did You Know?
Portage Path follows the original American Indian portage between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. This floodplain was utilized by the planners to place the Ohio & Erie Canal, as it was low-lying and close to water.
