Landscape Stabilization Plans

Landscape stabilization plans provide important and timely guidance for protecting the most threatened and vulnerable cultural landscape features from loss. Emergency technical information assists landscape managers in halting and reversing deterioration and improving resource condition. Stabilization recommendations are aimed at mitigating threats, repairing damage, and protecting original cultural landscape materials and features until a comprehensive cultural landscape report and treatment plan are prepared.

A stabilization plan is divided into five phases:

• A thorough condition assessment of extant landscape features that are deteriorating or threatened

• The identification and prioritization of threats to the condition of assessed resources

• The identification of critical stabilization and protection work required for halting and/or reversing the deterioration of resources

• A schedule for implementing stabilization recommendations that is prioritized based on feature significance, degree of deterioration, severity of impacts, and park operational needs

• A record-keeping system for documenting stabilization work completed, changes in resource condition, and field observations
