The Second World War brought the United States out of the Great Depression and the nation emerged as a world power. The World War II Memorial is a reminder of the sacrifice, unity and service of a unique generation of Americans. They arose to eventual victory and the country transformed itself into a new age.
Did You Know?
The Service Flag was used during World Wars I and II. Each family was entitled to hang a small flag in their window; the blue star in the center of the red-bordered white rectangle signified a family member in active service. The star was replaced with a gold one if the family member died in action.
