Washington, DC: A Guide to the Historic Neighborhoods and Monuments of Our Nation's Capital was produced by the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Washington, DC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the Historical Society of Washington, DC, the DC Heritage Tourism Coalition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO). It was created under the direction of Carol D. Shull, Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, National Park Service, Patrick Andrus, Heritage Tourism Director, and Beth L. Savage, Publications Director. Washington, DC: A Guide to the Historic Neighborhoods and Monuments of Our Nation's Capital is based on information in the files of the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmark collections.

Suzanne Ganschinetz, Architectural Historian, Historic Preservation Division, DC SHPO, compiled materials and wrote property descriptions and contextual essays for the itinerary. Steve Raiche, Chief, Historic Preservation Division, DC SHPO, contributed in conceptualizing and compiling materials. Sarah Pope, NPS historian, coordinated project production for the National Register and wrote property descriptions. Claire Crerar and Doug Pulak of GSA compiled materials and wrote property descriptions. Nathan Poe, NCSHPO historian, designed the travel itinerary.

Additional property descriptions were written by Rustin Quaide, Jeff Joeckel and Bill Wright, NCSHPO historians, Michelle St. Claire, Theresa Campbell-Page, and Amy Langford, National Register interns, and Stephen Morris, NPS. Shannon Bell, NCSHPO historian, assisted in editing the property descriptions. Ben Pugno, National Register intern, took photographs and compiled materials. Gail Redmond of the Historical Society of Washington, DC provided valuable assistance during research for historic photographs used in the itinerary.
