Located at the edge of the Monterey Presidio, El Castillo consists of the partially exposed ruins of a 1794 Spanish fort considered the best preserved Spanish fort west of St. Augustine, Florida. A monument to Father Junipero Serra is located at the site. Just below the ruins of the Spanish fort lie the remains of a prehistoric shell midden.

El Castillo is located at the edge of Monterey Presidio, facing Lighthouse Ave., in Monterey.
