The National Register of Historic Places presents the newest Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) lesson plan, "The Battle of Oriskany: Blood Shed a Stream Running Down" online at www.cr.nps.gov/nr/ For hundreds of years, central and western New York had been inhabited by the six member nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. During the colonial period the French, the Dutch, and the British coveted its strategic location along an important fur trade route. Yet the interest of the Europeans and the European-American colonists often produced friction. No episode better captures the brutal conflict in the Mohawk Valley than the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777, when neighbor fighting neighbor transformed a quiet ravine into a bloody slaughterhouse. The British, desiring to defeat the American Rebels in New York, sent troops commanded by General Barry St. Leger, hoping British loyalists would flock to their banner. The two sides clashed for control of the Mohawk Valley. Using Maps, Readings, Images, Activities and other materials, Teaching with Historic Places brings the importance of the battle to both students and educators in this latest online lesson plan.
