The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

The Gulfport Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center Historic District is significant for its association with the federal government's commitment to health care of World War I and World War II veterans. As defined in the United States Second Generation Veterans Hospital Multiple Property Documentation Form, the Gulfport VA Medical Center Historic District is an example of a Period I, Neuropsychiatric Second Generation Veterans Hospital. The Historic District is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A at a state level of significance in the areas of Politics/ Government because of the importance of securing the federal facility and its impact on the local community and veterans of the state of Mississippi. The Gulfport VA Medical Center Historic District is also eligible under Criterion A at the state level of significance in the area of Health I Medicine because of the mission of the federal government, through the Veterans Bureau and the VA, to provide neuropsychiatric treatment and occupational therapy to the veterans of World War I and World War II. The Gulfport VA Medical Center Historic District is also eligible under Criterion C in the area of Architecture at the local level of significance as an excellent example of a Period I, Second Generation Veterans Hospital exhibiting the Spanish Colonial Revival/ Mission Revival styles and design.
