Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace Fire Escape Contract Awarded

The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that the contract to replace the emergency fire escape at Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site has been awarded. Once the work is completed, which should take approximately 90 days, the site will reopen to the public. Thank you for your patience.

The site, located in lower Manhattan on East 20th Street, is the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. On May 11, 2011, Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace closed to undergo safety-related repairs, following an inspection that indicated several life-safety code deficiencies, including the exterior emergency fire escape. The NPS accepted the recommendation to close the site because the building must have two primary means of egress, once of which is the metal fire escape stair tower attached to the back of the building.
