Let Us Have Peace

Established: May 1st, 1959

Location: Riverside Park at West 122nd Street, Manhattan.

Overview: The purpose of General Grant National Memorial is to preserve the final resting
place of Ulysses Simpson Grant and his beloved wife, Julia Dent Grant, and commemorate the contributions of Grant as both commanding general of the Union Army who won the Civil War and as the 18th president of the United States.
The memorial mausoleum, which began construction in 1891, is a granite structure, 150 feet high, and 90 feet wide on each side. Donations from around the world were made totaling more than $600,000 toward the construction of the Grant Monument. At that time it was the largest public fundraising effort ever. Designed by architect John H. Duncan, the granite and marble structure was completed in 1897 and remains one of the largest mausoleums in the United States. On April 27, 1897, an estimated 1.5 million people attended the parade and dedication ceremony for the Grant Monument.

Exhibits/Tours: The visitor center contains a permanent gallery exhibit of the major events in General Grants life. Visitors can also view a short film on General Grants life in the visitor center. Self guided tours of the mausoleum, with rangers nearby to answer any questions, are also available.
