Digital maps for the National Park Service

Jim McAndrew

Jim is the lead developer for Places of Interest, a system that allows National Park Service employees and the public to contribute information to Park Service datasets and OpenStreetMap. He splits his time between working with the public and developing software.

Jim's interests include databases, maps, open licenses, and creating software to pull them all together. These interests have led him to earn a B.S. in Information Science from Drexel University, and he is currently working towards an M.S. in Geographic Information Systems at the University of Denver. He has been an active member of the OpenStreetMap community since 2009, and has been a member of the board for the US Chapter of OpenStreetMap for the last two years.

When he's not working at his computer, he's usually out exploring the world, biking, hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing. He is interested in learning about how the local geography affects peoples' lives and how people affect their landscapes. Every person has an individual life experience, and everyone has valuable local knowledge. Jim's goals are to make it easier for people to share their local knowledge with the rest of the world and to make the world a little more accessible through open geographic information.
