Listed below are examples of projects, scheduled for 2009, that we need your time, thought and energy to complete. In addition to those listed there are many more opportunities to volunteer in the North Cascades National Park. Don't forget to bring your lunch, gloves and work boots on the project days listed below.

Diablo Lake Overlook Plant Restoration
July 11, 9am-3pm
Volunteers will help restore a native plant community at the Diablo Lake Overlook on Highway 20. Volunteers and park staff will remove non-native invasive plants in the morning and collect seed from native plants in the area in the afternoon. Volunteers will plant some of the seed immediately and some will be propagated in the park nursery for future use.
Colonial Creek Campground Morning Restoration
July 18, August 1, August 22.
Families or individuals will be invited to meet with a park staff person at 9am on Saturday morning at Colonial Creek. Volunteers will receive a brief introduction to the park and description of the project. Visitors will then learn about native plants while pulling non-native plants and gathering the seeds of native plants for replanting. A 30 minute naturalist walk will end the morning.
Cascade Pass Vegetation Restoration
October 3
Volunteers will hike to one of the most beautiful locations in the park and help park staff planting to recover native plant cover. This wilderness site is accessed by a moderately strenuous and remarkably scenic hike. Meet at the Cascade Pass parking lot at 9am, carry plants and tools to the pass and plant until 3pm.
Free day trips at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center
June 6, July 19, August 2, September 27
Ramble through the mossy woods. Hike to a hidden waterfall. Paddle on emerald-green Diablo Lake. Learn more about the North Cascades Institute, its programs and the eco-friendly Learning Center campus. These free Day Trips are easy to enjoy – just lace up your boots, pack your lunch and venture to the campus off Highway 20. Bring personal gear, appropriate clothing, food and water. This is a day program only; participants are responsible for their own lodging and meals off campus.

Forest and Waterfall Hikes
Gently paced, naturalist-led hikes depart from the Learning Center office. Visitors may hike independently as well.
Diablo Lake Canoeing
Voyager canoe trips are weather-dependent and first come, first served. Twelve passengers maximum per trip; must be over six years of age. Prior experience is not necessary and all canoeing equipment will be provided.
