For Students

If you are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student and you are taking at least a half-time course load, at an accredited institution, and have at least a 2.0 grade point average, you may be eligible for a student appointment. Student appointments are different in that they do not have an hour limitation, like regular temporary appointments.

You will need to provide the following information if you wish to be considered for a Student Appointment:

  • Resume. View a sample.
  • OF-306, Declaration for Federal Employment.
  • A copy of your transcripts.
  • An letter stating acceptance or enrollment from a school representative on school letterhead.

Other requirements for employment as a Student are:

  • Under Executive Order 11935, only United States citizens and nationals (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island) may hold civil service jobs.
  • All new employees must successfully undergo a background investigation before we can set an entrance on duty (EOD) date and before you can begin employment.

STEP
The Student Temporary Employment Program is a federal hiring process open to all degree-seeking students. Eligible candidates can earn money, continue their education, and combine academic study with on-the-job experience. Student hires have a less competitive application process than other employees.

For other federal jobs
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management and Department of Education's Student Financial Assistance office has a new web site designed just for high school and college students -- Studentjobs.gov.

The job search on Studentjobs.gov connects to USAJOBS and shows all jobs that have been identified as available to students. These include temporary, coop positions, internships, volunteer opportunities, and university work-study positions.

Other Opportunities for Students

  • Each year North Cascades welcomes a number of full-time volunteers from the Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national non-profit organization. These volunteers, who may be high school or college students or other adults, assist with a range of vital activities from trail maintenance or bear management to backcountry patrol or assisting park visitors. In return, the volunteers receive valuable training and experience, have most expenses paid, and are able to live and work in one of America's premier national parks. In addition to North Cascades, SCA places volunteers at hundreds of other national and state parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and other natural and historical sites nationwide.
  • The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is a summer employment program for young men and women ages 15 through 18. Through work projects done in the park, this program provides enrollees with a better understanding of their environment and management of our natural resources.
