October 2: North Cascades National Park Headquarters

810 State Route 20, Sedro-Woolley

12:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

North Cascades National Park is pleased to present free programs by Artist-in-Residence Becky Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher is a local artist from Sedro-Woolley who enjoys hiking and getting out in the North Cascades. Originally trained in illustration, her artistic interests diverged into glass, and then she began oil painting in 2005. It is through this medium that her ability to depict the natural world shines. "What I was seeing suddenly became expressible in a way that no other medium in my experience had allowed," explained Ms. Fletcher. "I use a representational hand because the reality of these places is more extraordinary than anything I could make up. I want to draw attention . . . provide a window into moments and things that many people don’t see."

Ms. Fletcher’s first presentation will be October 1 at the Upper Skagit Library, 45770 Main Street, Concrete at 6:30 p.m. During the one-hour program, she will share pictures and stories about her experiences as an artist and her month-long residency in the park. She will present the same program twice again October 2 at North Cascades National Park Headquarters, 810 State Route 20, Sedro-Woolley at 12:00 p.m. (bring your lunch) and 6:30 p.m. October 2 is also the 40th anniversary of the establishment of North Cascades National Park Service Complex, so join us for celebratory snacks!

Ms. Fletcher will be in residence from September 11 through mid-October. You can find her on rainy and cold days working in the main lobby of the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center, where you can share stories and conversation about her work and experiences. You can also find her on warm and sunny days hiking park trails. Call the Visitor Center at (206) 386-4495 x.11 to learn when she will be having "studio hours" or if you would like to arrange a time to observe her creative process.

The Artist-in-Residence program invites professional artists to spend 4-6 weeks exploring the North Cascades National Park landscape and its people while sharing their craft and artistic interpretation of the area with park visitors, staff, and community members. Additional information about the program is available at: http://www.nps.gov/archive/volunteer/air.htm
