Winter is an excellent time to visit Stehekin and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. This week’s 36 inches of snowfall started the snowshoeing and up-valley ski season in the Stehekin Valley. Numerous snowshoe and backcountry ski routes invite visitors of all ability levels to experience the beauty, solitude, and wildlife of the winter wilderness.

December 28 through March 8, the National Park Service will offer ranger programs covering various natural and cultural history topics on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Stehekin Landing Resort and guided snowshoe walks on Saturday mornings meeting at the end of the plowed Stehekin Road. The Golden West Visitor Center is open 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and will be open daily 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. March 15 through April 30. National Park Service rangers at the Golden West Visitor Center can provide details and maps of area trails, trip planning assistance and naturalist information on the Stehekin Valley. The Golden West Visitor Center also offers a bookstore, resource reading area, informational exhibits and the Golden West Gallery, which features exhibits of art inspired by the North Cascades.

The National Park Service concession operation, Stehekin Landing Resort, is open through the winter. The restaurant is open for lunch on all boat service days. Beginning December 26, full restaurant service is available on weekends from Friday mid-day to Sunday mid-day. The Resort also offers fully equipped kitchenettes, equipment rentals, vehicle rentals and transportation service to ski and snowshoe trails on the weekend. Information on weekend and holiday packages is available on their website www.stehekinlanding.com. Other lodging options and recreational services are available throughout the Stehekin Valley.
