Construction will begin Monday, February 21 on the Stehekin Winter Ferry Landing Improvement Project. This new dock will provide universal access for all passengers traveling up Lake Chelan via the commercial ferry system. It is part of over $2 million dollars in work that has been completed or is planned to improve the accessibility of facilities and services in Stehekin and is the most notable improvement to the Stehekin Ferry Landing in almost forty years.

A tentative construction schedule is as follows:

Week of February 21 - Mobilize crew to Stehekin, start driving piles.
Week of February 28 - Continue driving piles.
Week of March 7 - Finish driving piles. Begin bulkhead repair.
Week of March 14 - Begin concrete work.

Ferry service and access to the ferry landing in Stehekin will be maintained throughout construction. The Stehekin Landing Resort will maintain lunch service this winter on days the ferry travels to Stehekin and full service this summer. Look for more details on Stehekin Landing Resort services, including the 2011 Schedule, at www.stehekinlanding.com.

The Stehekin Winter Ferry Landing Improvement Project will install a fixed walkway along the western bulkhead of the existing boat launch/winter Ferry Landing, including new pilings. Construction should be completed by early June.

“We want people to come and visit Stehekin. These ferry landing accessibility improvements will make it easier for people to do so” said North Cascades National Park Complex Superintendent Chip Jenkins. “This project is part of our overall effort to improve accessibility in Stehekin for visitors.”

New shuttle buses, remodeled restrooms at the Stehekin Landing Resort, and an upgrade to the popular Rainbow Mist Trail are some of the other projects in progress or completed to improve accessibility in Stehekin.

Wesslen Construction, Inc. based out of Spokane, WA was awarded the construction contract in September, 2010. The combination of their relevant experience, past performance, and price made them the “best value” for the government.
