Some insects can be nuisances, but the variety of colorful butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies only adds to your visit to the scenic river.

Throughout its length, the Niobrara supports over 75 species of dragonflies and damselflies, as well as nearly twice that number of butterfly species.

Six distinct ecosystems blend along 76 miles of river: eastern deciduous forest, Rocky Mountain montane forest, northern boreal forest, eastern tall-grass prairie, Sandhills mixed-grass and western short-grass prairie.
