"Go To Kansas"

Former enslaved African Americans left Kentucky in organized colonies at the end of the of post-Civil War Reconstruction period to experience freedom on the free soils of Kansas. Nicodemus represents the involvement of African Americans in the western expansion and settlement of the Great Plains. It is the oldest and only remaining all Black Town west of the Mississippi River.

Nicodemus National Historic Site Seeks Public Comments

Since 1998, the Park Visitor Center has operated out of Nicodemus Township Hall. Administrative offices are located in two duplex units at the Nicodemus Housing Authority Villas. These structures have served the park well, but as programming and operations grow and facilities are improved, the park will soon outgrow it's current spaces.

Therefore, the park has embarked upon a process to help determine its future programming and spatial needs and develop the criteria to select an appropriate location. The Visitor Center Site Selection Study and Environmental Assessment explores the issues associated with planning for a new Visitor Center and offers them for public review and comment.

There are three options available to access, review and comment upon the documents. You may:

  • access the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website: http://parkplanning.nps.gov
  • attend one of two Public Meetings (February 11 from 1 to 3 pm or Feb 14 from 6 to 8 pm) at the Nicodemus Visitor Center/Township Hall, or
  • review the documents as your schedule permits at the Nicodemus Visitor Center /Township Hall between 9am and 4:30 pm, all days.
