How We Help

When a state, county or local government expresses interest in acquiring a historic surplus property, the National Park Service works with the government entity to complete the application, providing technical assistance to ensure conformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s “Standards for Rehabilitation.”

The National Park Service formally recommends that GSA or DoD transfers the property to the appropriate applicant. GSA or DoD then deeds the property to the applicant. Once a property is transferred, the National Park Service is responsible for monitoring the property in perpetuity to ensure that the historic property is maintained and protected.

Properties transferred under this program must be used in accordance with the terms of the transfer in perpetuity unless amended by mutual agreement of the National Park Service and the recipient.
