Rivers & Trails Program
Partnership Projects for 2008

26 New and 35 Continuing Projects in Northeast Region

Our 2008 program includes 26 new and 35 continuing projects serving every state in the Northeast Region. This year's work includes exciting challenges like creating new water trails in Maine, New Jersey, and New York City; strengthening the link between heritage initiatives and recreation in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia; and expanding our innovative partnership with Groundwork USA by assisting in the establishment of Groundwork Trusts in Buffalo, NY; Wyoming County, WV; and Springfield, MA.

The results we get for our partners are dramatic: last year, our staff helped leverage over $75 million for projects in 235 communities. As a result, our region received over 350 letters (including 15 from Members of Congress) requesting our help for 92 projects - an increase of over 20% from last year. We are tremendously excited about the quality of this year's projects, and know they will help make a difference in their communities. Scroll down to see our complete list of 2008 Projects & Partners.

Project Highlights: Attleboro Trails Network, Massachusetts
Attleboro on the Move

Walking with the Mayor - Rivers & Trails is partnering with the Attleboro (Massachusetts) YMCA and the City of Attleboro to promote active living by developing a citywide network of trails for walking and bicycling. On National Trails Day, the Mayor led a hike and dedicated .5 miles of trail.

Project Highlights: Walkway Over the Hudson, Poughkeepsie & Highland, New York
A Bridge to the Future

A Bridge to the Future - One of the most spectacular views over New York's Hudson River, the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge is envisioned as a 1.3-mile linear park across the Hudson for pedestrians, bicyclists and people with disabilities. We're partnering with Walkway Over the Hudson to help make it a reality. A major foundation had donated funds for a detailed engineering study.
