Sandy Hook Light
Sandy Hook, New Jersey
Photographer: Robert Hillmann
In this photo, Mr. Hillman
captures the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, usually recognized as an icon
of summer, at its blustery, winter best. In 1764, this nine-story
brick tower, octagonal in section, was the fifth lighthouse in America.
Originally called the New York Lighthouse, it guided vessels to
and from the nation's major ports, steering them away from Sandy
Hook's treacherous shoals. New York merchants financed the lottery
that secured funds for its construction and in 1789 it was deeded
to the federal government. Today it remains the oldest lighthouse
in the United States.
In 1997 the Lighthouse
was transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to the National Park Service.
The Light, itself, with its 3rd order Fresnel lens, remains an active
aid to navigation administered by the Coast Guard.
