El Santuario de Chimayo
Chimayo, New Mexico
Photographer: Allen Maestas
Completed in 1816, this
is a very well preserved, unrestored example of a small adobe church,
notable for its original decorations, including numerous superb
religious paintings. Mr. Maestas captures the quiet majesty of this
National Historic Landmark under a brilliant blue sky.
Twin bell towers flank its entrance and the interior is especially
notable for its original decoration including numerous religious
paintings and statuary. El Santuario became a place of pilgrimage
soon after its construction. The chapel centers the small village
of El Potrero, one of several settlements in the Santa Cruz Valley
collectively called Chimayo.
