Durango-Silverton Narrow
Gauge Railroad
Durango to Silverton, Colorado
Photographer: Susan Hughes
Ms. Huges has perfectly
captured history in motion with her photo of the Durango-Silverton
Narrow Gauge Railroad. Completed in 1882, this 45-mile stretch of
the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway is one of the few narrow-gauge
railroads surviving in the nation. It was built to haul ores from
isolated areas to smelters and was also the main source of transportation
and support for the mining community of Silverton, 45 miles form
Durango. Covering a spectacularly scenic route, the railroad now
operates as a popular tourist attraction during the summer.
