Glade Creek Road Update Sept 19 2007

Contact: Lorrie Sprague, 304 465-6521
"We are pleased to announce that the Glade Creek Road has re-opened as far as the Grandview Sandbar camping area," announced Mike Hunter, Deputy Superintendent of New River Gorge National River. "The campground at Grandview Sandbar is also open for the public to use," Hunter continued. Upstream of the Grandview Sandbar, the road remains closed to public vehicular traffic. The National Park Service (NPS) contractor, Orders Construction, continues to repair other sections of the same road where numerous slides and washouts have occurred during heavy rain events in recent years. Located just off Highway 41 near Prince, WV, the Glade Creek road is popular with fishermen, campers and river users. Hunter said that "the public may bicycle or hike on the closed section of road when the contractor is not working, which is Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, unless otherwise posted." |
Did You Know?
The New River Gorge was logged extensively thoughout the past century. The landscape is now recovering, with the park ecosystem returning to its more natural state, but there are still plenty of signs of the past activities.
