Glen Jean West Virginia,Fee rates for Meadow Creek Campground, the new flagship campground at the New River Gorge National River, are now set at:
Walk-in tent only site with no electricity, $10.00 per night
Walk-in tent only site with electricity $18.00 per night
Drive-in, car site with electricity $24.00 per night
Drive-in, RV site with electricity and water $28.00 per night
These rates are announced in the Federal Register onMay 12, 2014in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA). Implementation of the park's fee program can begin six months following Federal Register publication, which means the NPS may begin charging camping fees in November, 2014.
The Meadow Creek Campground, located on the banks of the New River about two miles downstream of the Sandstone Visitor Center, will offer visitors four walk-in tent-only sites, seventeen drive-in car sites and five drive-in RV sites, as well as one large group camping site. Amenities will include communal water spigots, vault toilets, a dump station, a camp host, an amphitheater for park interpretive programs and a public boat launch. The campground was originally scheduled to open in the early summer of 2014, but because of the harsh winter, construction delays have pushed the opening back to the fall of 2014.
The National Park Service determined the new fee rates based on comparisons to rates and amenities in other campgrounds in Southern West Virginia, a cost-benefit analysis for fee collection and opportunities for public involvement. The public commented on proposed fees over a 30-day period in August and September of 2013 via the park website, Facebook and Twitter. Commenters generally supported charging fees at Meadow Creek Campground, and suggested that campers have the additional option of tent site camping without electricity for $10.00 per night, a rate that was not initially being considered by park managers. Fee revenues, FLREA, will be dedicated to managing the fee collection program, covering electricity and water costs, providing other campground amenities, and maintaining and upgrading Meadow Creek Campground facilities, as well as facilities in other park campgrounds.
Public comments were also solicited in October and November of 2013 on a proposal to charge fees at three existing park campgrounds, Army Camp, Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar Campgrounds. Based on the public's feedback and a cost-benefit analysis that revealed that the operational and administrative costs of collecting fees at these campgrounds would outweigh the potential benefits of providing improved services to park visitors, park managers decided not to pursue fee collection at the three existing campgrounds.
