A Currier print of Martin Van Buren circa 1836. Complimentary images such as this were used to improve a politicians view among voters. Van Buren was, indeed , an avid horseman and rode nearly every day.
This bust was completed by Hiram Powers from life during Van Buren's presidency. The original is displayed in the Red Room at the White House. This copy was produced by powers in the the 1860's for the Van Buren family.
The General Order containing notice of Martin Van Buren's death and instructing that his passing be observed appropriately by goverment offices. The General Order was issued July 25, 1862 by then President Abraham Lincoln.
