Hasotino Village archeological site, once the largest village along the Snake River, was occupied until the end of the 19th century. The site is on a broad, sloping plain overlooking the east bank of the Snake River, just upriver from its confluence with the Clearwater. It is adjacent to the developed part of Hell's Gate State Park. There is little visual evidence of the large village and eel fishery that was once here. The Nez Perce name for the site is Hesutiin (pronounced He-soo teen). A small display in the Hell's Gate State Park Visitor Center describes early occupation of the site. |
