Explore Civil War times through activities, games, songs, and more. Members of the Mass. 54th Volunteer Regiment, a reenactment corps, will be making a special visit to New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park on Thurs., Feb. 21 from 12:00 noon to 3:30 PM, as part of the park's A Call to Arms, a day to explore the Civil War. They will share the stories, triumphs and challenges of this all-black Civil War regiment and its New Bedford connection, and hold a weapons "drill and dress-up" for students and other interested participants. The Call to Arms event will run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. and is free to people and open to people of all ages.


In addition to the Mass. 54th Regiment's activities, New Bedford Whaling NHP will feature other Civil War activities to mark the sesquicennial year (or 150th anniversary) of the Civil War. Other activities include: 10:00 AM: Join the Ranks: participants will receive their enlistment papers, learn about uniforms, arms, and inspecting the troops. 11:00 AM, make a coat of arms. 12:00: learn about camp life.  How did people do laundry in the days before washing machines?  Make slippers to wear  that are just like those of Civil War soldiers, and join in a singalong of songs from that time. From 2:00 on, meet Dr. Saw Bones, who will be "dressing wounds" of the "injured."  At 3:00 PM, find out how members of the Underground Railroad and soldiers were able to send secret messages using Morse and other codes. At 4:00 PM, receive your discharge papers.
