In addition to the Mass. 54th Regiment's activities, New Bedford Whaling NHP will feature other Civil War activities to mark the sesquicennial year (or 150th anniversary) of the Civil War. Other activities include: 10:00 AM: Join the Ranks: participants will receive their enlistment papers, learn about uniforms, arms, and inspecting the troops. 11:00 AM, make a coat of arms. 12:00: learn about camp life. How did people do laundry in the days before washing machines? Make slippers to wear that are just like those of Civil War soldiers, and join in a singalong of songs from that time. From 2:00 on, meet Dr. Saw Bones, who will be "dressing wounds" of the "injured." At 3:00 PM, find out how members of the Underground Railroad and soldiers were able to send secret messages using Morse and other codes. At 4:00 PM, receive your discharge papers.
