Monuments and Memorials

The Commemorative Works Act of 1986 established standards and procedures for memorializations that would occur on Federal lands managed by the National Park Service or the General Sevices Administration within the District of Columbia and its environs. The National Park Service is represented at the National Capital Memorial Commission by the Associate Superintendent, Stewardship and Partnerships.

Memorial proposals, draft legislation, sites, designs, and other administrative duties which were stipulated in the act and its amendments are administered through the Office of Stewardship and Partnerships, in coordination with the managers of any potentially impacted park.

The National Capital Memorial Commission serves as a forum where memorial sponsors, their architects, and their designers can obtain guidance, direction and input from the perspectives of NPS and agencies responsible for guiding and directing the planning and character of development in the Nation's Capital. The composite nature of the Commission provides a unique opportunity for exchange of ideas and clarification of recommendations and directions on issues which the sponsors will be required to address before Congressional, National Park Service, National Capital Planning Commission, and Commission of Fine Arts approvals requisite to legislative authorities, siting and design can be obtained.
