The National Park Service uses Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) as a tool for park management and research. Parks are
responsible for their own GIS offices, but additional assitance
is needed to help the park managers perform GIS related tasks.
The GIS Regional Technical Support Center (RTSC) is a regional
NPS office located in the Office of Lands, Resources, and
Planning, and is geared towards assisting the parks in GIS
related matters. This office is located at the National Capital
Region Office, in Washington DC. We have expanded the use
of GIS into every field of management, from cultural resources
to planning, from natural resources to land use issues. We
are currently using GIS to assist the
planning projects in determining the alternatives in three
general management plans. We have also been able to provide
assistance to parks in adjacent land use development using
viewshed analysis. These are just a few of the areas we are
using GIS, but we are finding new uses daily.
