Students read books related to the theme, wrote reports and stories, and related math exercises. For example, "transportation" week the children read railroad history and calculated travel times and distances for their weekend field trip by train to the Science Museum in Richmond. The summer program was successful. The program's staff noted improved attitudes of the children towards school and adults, increased poise and self-confidence, better fitness and nutrition, and more positive attutude toward their community.
