Tolson Park Youth Center in Elkhart, Indiana

Project Name: Tolson Park Golden Angels Program

Description: A unique program where senior citizens use the Tolson Park Youth Center during school hours, in exchange for supervising youth after school at the center.

Project Name: Four Swimming Pools

Description: Renovated Howell Park Pool, Helfrich Park Pool, Lorraine Park Pool, and Garvin Park Pool.

Description: Created a neighborhood watch program for parks, a Junior Ranger Program - a school educational program in cooperation with the school system, and a Park Ranger program - hired five park rangers with police powers and rangers also assisted with the Junior Ranger Program.

Project Name: Citizens Action Program

Fiscal Year: 1982

Description: Created a partnership approach that involved citizens in park maintenance, and provided matching grants to neighborhoods that demonstrated self-sufficiency in park maintenance and management. Also created a maintenance review board who made final decisions on all maintenance work for parks under the care of citizens.

Project Name: Garvin Park and C.K. Newsome Community Center

Federal Share: $300,000

Fiscal Year: 1983

Description: Garvin Park - excavated Evansmere Lake, and made access improvements which included curb cuts, paved trails, and fishing pier. C.K. Newsom Community Center - renovated the roof, interior ceiling, heating and air conditioning system.

Project Name: Seven Recreation Areas

Federal Share: $210,000

Fiscal Year: 1983

Description: East Swinney Park - install sewer to drain tennis facility and restrooms. Brackenridge Playlot - installed playground equipment and disabled access improvements. Turple Playlot - installed playground equipment. Hamilton Park - replaced restroom which was destroyed by fire. Hanna Homestead Park - replaced roof on play shelter, renovated restrooms installed playground equipment, and fence. McCormick Park - renovated recreation building, and park lot, installed new playground equipment. McMillen Park - renovated swimming pool.

Description: Renovated civic center, handball courts, three outside stairways, and one interior emergency stairway. Removed natural gas pipes from building.

Project Name: Municipal Gardens Community Center and White River Recreation Corridor

Description: Renovated Municipal Gardens Community Center and boat/fishing dock, parking lot, converted closed road into hike/bike trail, replaced small boat tie-up and beach on west bank of White River, and renovated boat landing in Riverside Park on east bank.

Project Name: Watkins and Reodius Community Centers

Description: Watkins Community Center - renovated roof, doors, windows, gym floors, and electrical system. Rhodius Community Center - renovated roof, interior of center building, and parking lot.

Project Name: Build a Park - Youth Conservation Corps

Federal Share: $99,960

Fiscal Year: 1992

Description: Created a Youth Conservation Corps summer recreation and work program. Sixty 14-17 year old teens served in two week sessions. Programming included citizenship, community service, self awarness, physical fitness. Project renovated an old portion of a zoo in George Washington Park and converted the zoo area into an environmental education area.

Description: Renovation of swimming pool, bathhouse and concession area, remove unused road bed, move basketball court, down-size and repair parking lot, trail, and family activity center.

Description: Renovate swimming pool, bathhouse, ballfield, landscaping, and fencing.
